Michael Powolny for Loetz, Tango Series Yellow Art Glass Vase with Black Handles blown glass vase with hot-applied black handles, circa 1900.
Michael Powolny was an Austrian artist and leader figure of the vienna secession art nouveau movement and a founding figure of the Wiener Werksätte in Vienna during the early 20th century. His figurines and decorative objects utilize similar Jugendstil (Austrian Art Nouveau) aesthetics like the work of other Viennese Secessionists, such as the painter Gustav Klimt and the architect Koloman Moser. Notably unique to his style is the weaving of floral elements into arabesque patterns amidst figures and architecture. Born on September 18, 1871 in Judenburg, Austria, he learned the pottery trade from his father and went on to study glass and ceramics at the Vienna Industrial Arts School in Znaim, Austria in 1894. He also studied for several years at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1906, along with artist Bertold Löffler, he founded the Wiener Keramik workshop, which was later absorbed into the Wiener Wekstatte, a coalition of visual artists based in Vienna. Powolny’s works are in the collections of the Neue Galerie in New York and the British Museum in London among others. He died on January 4, 1954 in Vienna, Austria.
