Rembrandt Annibale Bugatti (1884–1916), "Baboon". Fine casting with a nuanced green patina. Signed in the bronze.

Born in Milan in 1884, Rembrandt Bugatti was the son of the famous Italian furniture designer, Carlo Bugatti, and the brother of the automobile manufacturer Ettore Bugatti. His uncle was none other than Giovanni Segantini, a painter of bucolic subjects. Rembrandt was a gifted child and moved to animal sculpture at an early age. At the age of 14, he modelled his first sculpture against his father’s will who wanted his son to become an engineer.

In 1902, he went with his family to Paris and three years later secured a contract with Hébrard to cast his bronze works. He exhibited at the Society of Fine Arts and at the Salon d’Automne. Success came quickly.

In 1907, the Royal Society of Zoology invited the young man to live in Antwerp, which gave him an opportunity to draw the animals in one of the best zoos of the time. His work was characterized by his keen sense of observation, his empathy with the animals and his capacity to detect the individual features. His casting technique was also based on imperfections and veracity.
