Gen Paul (1895–1975), The Accordionist, mixed media painting in ink and gouache on paper, signed lower left.Eugene Paul, known as Gen Paul, was born in 1895 and raised in the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre in Paris. The predominance of the hands, their exaggeration, which makes all their beauty, is characteristic of this period that Gen Paul himself called his "period of the big pognes". In his life he came to know a great many of the artists, from the anonymous to the world famous, who established themselves in the neighborhood. A self-taught artist, Gen Paul began expressing himself in drawings and paintings as a child; his earliest works show a remarkable talent. In 1928, Gen Paul was at the height of his art. A critic from the Gazette de l’Hôtel Drouot described the artist’s work as follows: "Gen Paul is undoubtedly the greatest representative, and perhaps the only one, of expressionism in the French tradition. " In 1928 Gen Paul exhibited at the Bing Gallery alongside Picasso, Rouault, Braque and Soutine.
