Vincente Puig signed, oil painting "Europa", depicting the mythological subject of Europa on the back of Zeus turned into a bull. Signed top left. Newspaper article affixed to verso. Oil painting on canvas mounted on a wood panel.

The myth of Europa begins with Zeus, the Greek god, who fell in love with her. While Europa was wandering among her father’s cattle, she encountered a magnificent white bull. Unbeknownst to her, the bull was Zeus in disguise, intending to deceive her. When Europa climbed onto the bull’s back, Zeus leapt into the sea and carried her far from her homeland. Her father, distraught, sent her brother, Cadmus, to find her. Although Cadmus never succeeded, his journey led him to Greece, where he introduced the alphabet. The continent of Europe derives its name from the princess Europa.
