Summary:

Marcel Gromaire (French, 1892–1971) ink on paper drawing titled Lounging Nude. Depicts a reclining female figure rendered in expressive linear style. Signed lower right. Framed behind glass. Mid-20th century.

Marcel Gromaire was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator associated with the École de Paris and known for his robust, expressive style. Born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre in 1892, he studied briefly in Paris before serving in World War I—an experience that deeply influenced his early artistic themes.

Gromaire developed a unique aesthetic combining structural solidity, muted color palettes, and simplified, monumental forms. His subjects often included working-class life, industry, nudes, and still lifes, rendered with a sense of weight and dignity. Although influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, his work remained grounded in figuration and humanist values.

He exhibited with prominent Paris salons such as the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d’Automne, and his works are held in major institutions, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and the Musée National d’Art Moderne (Centre Pompidou).
