Summary:

William Stanley Haseltine (Philadelphia, 1835 – Rome, 1900), pen, gray ink and gray wash on paper depicting cypress trees within the famed gardens of the Villa d’Este, Tivoli. Signed with initials and inscribed lower left “WSH / Tivoli 58.” Created during the artist’s early European travels, this refined sheet reflects Haseltine’s lifelong fascination with Italian scenery and architecture.

A Harvard graduate, Haseltine studied in Düsseldorf and traveled with notable American painters including Emanuel Leutze, Worthington Whittredge, and Albert Bierstadt before establishing himself in Rome. His Italian landscapes were widely admired and collected by American patrons.
