Ferdinand Victor Léon Roybet (1840–1920) was a prominent French painter and engraver, celebrated for his virtuosity in historical genre scenes and high-society portraits. He became a defining figure of "historicist" painting in the late 19th century, often recreating 16th and 17th-century life with meticulous attention to period costumes and textures.

Surface shows visible craquelure throughout, with scattered areas of thin paint, abrasion, and paint loss, most notably in the darker background and lower left area. Small losses and edge wear visible, including a chip/loss at the lower right edge. Surface appears under a somewhat dirty or discolored varnish. Frame with general wear, scuffs, and losses consistent with age.)
