Summary:

El Lissitzky (attrib) Monogrammed Suprematist Geometric Abstract Oil and Gouache Painting

Composition centered by a black square within a red circle, surrounded by angular and curvilinear forms on a pale ground. Monogrammed lower left. Oil and gouache on wood panel.

This image appears to relate to one of several variants associated with Proposal for a Monument to Rosa Luxemburg, or a Proun composition, by the Russian avant-garde artist El Lissitzky, created circa 1919 to 1921. This was an idea Lissitzky considered especially significant and one he explored through multiple variations. A related version is held in the collection of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and another variation is in the collection of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki. The offered work differs from those examples in a number of formal nuances, including shifts in balance, shape, and compositional emphasis. For Lissitzky, such subtle changes were often central to the strength and resolution of the final image.
