Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Pantheon. Hand-Drawn 18th Century Pen and Ink, Signed “Jonathan Hammond” Center and “PIRANISI” Lower Right. Veduta del Pantheon d’Agrippa oggi Chiesa di S. Maria ad Martyres. Ink and Watercolor on Wove Paper, Dated 1796.
This work represents a carefully rendered architectural view of the Pantheon in Rome, originally built under Marcus Agrippa and later consecrated as the Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. The monumental portico, Corinthian columns, and domed rotunda are depicted with precise draftsmanship and tonal washes.
Small alphabetic reference letters are incorporated throughout the architectural elements, corresponding to the explanatory text along the lower margin, reflecting the didactic approach characteristic of Piranesi-derived architectural studies.
The lower margin includes an Italian inscription describing the architectural history and significance of the Pantheon, consistent with Piranesi’s scholarly approach to Roman antiquity. Signed and dated in the center lower margin.
