Summary:
Unsigned old master painting of Saint George slaying the dragon, 16th -18th century depiction of Saint George on horseback with a tournament lance, killing a dragon.
This legendary Christian saint lived at the beginning of the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian (c. 284-305). The story of the dragon slayer comes from the medieval collection of texts "Legenda aurea, " according to which George freed the country from a tyrannical dragon—which can also be seen as a synonym for the tyrannical Emperor Diocletian—on the condition that the people convert to Christianity and be baptized. St. George is one of the Fourteen Saviors and is considered the patron saint of various countries, cities, noble families, and orders of chivalry, as well as scouts.
Baroque painting, oil on rough canvas, circa1600- 1700, unsigned, with craquelure, some older retouching, requiring some cleaning and restoration. It is in a gilt and white frame with a segmented arched top border.
