This important work by Jacob Willemsz de Wet reflects the artist’s focus on biblical and mythological subjects. His early painting, The Raising of Lazarus (1633, Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt), demonstrates strong affinities with the work of Jan Pynas and Pieter Lastman. A related composition from 1634 shows even closer stylistic parallels to Rembrandt van Rijn in the early 1630s. The pronounced emotional intensity and dramatic use of chiaroscuro found throughout de Wet’s oeuvre further support the view that he was influenced by, or possibly trained under, Rembrandt.

De Wet’s works are held in numerous prominent collections, including the National Gallery, Ashmolean Museum, Rijksmuseum, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, Musées de Lorraine, Harvard Art Museums, Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, among others.
