Summary:

Joseph Maria Beckert, Virgin and Child painting, signed lower left “Angelicus J Maria Beckert” and dated “A 1922 D.” A devotional representation of the Mother of God seated with the Christ Child before a stylized landscape, rendered in a refined and delicate manner with softly modeled features and gold leaf halos. Executed in oil on lead on wood. Verso with ownership inscription reading “Eigentum von Justiziar Georg Fischer München” and a donation inscription indicating presentation to the archiepiscopal seminary in Traunstein, dated July 13, 1929. Presented in a gilt frame.

Joseph Maria Beckert, also known as Fr. Angelicus Maria Beckert OP, was a German painter and former Dominican friar. Born in Berlin in 1889, he studied in Berlin, Munich, and Karlsruhe, and was influenced by earlier German religious painting traditions. He later worked in Munich and exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast.
