Summary:
François Le Moyne (attributed), oil on canvas painting depicting Hercules and Omphale in a mythological landscape with attendant putti. The composition closely follows Le Moyne’s Rococo manner, with the seated figures arranged beneath drapery and set against an open landscape.
François Le Moyne (1688–1737) was born in Paris and is known for mythological and religious figure painting. He received his first artistic instruction from his stepfather, Robert Le Vrac, called “Tournières” (1667–1752). Beginning in 1701, he studied with Louis Galloche (1670–1761) at the Académie Royale and also received some instruction from Pierre-Jacques Cazes (1676–1754), who particularly influenced his coloring. Le Moyne received a third-place medal in 1706, followed by a first-place medal in 1707. He won the Prix de Rome in 1711, though he did not make the subsequent trip to Rome. He was accepted as an agréé at the Académie Royale in 1716 and became a full member in 1718 on the strength of his work Hercules Kills Cacus. His documented students included François Boucher (1703–1770), Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700–1777), and Donat Nonotte (1708–1785). Nonotte assisted Le Moyne on the two major decorative projects at Saint-Sulpice and Versailles, and later became his biographer. From 1731 to 1737, Laurent Cars (1699–1771) worked in the artist’s studio.
