Summary:
Alberto Vargas (1896–1982), The 1945 Esquire Varga Calendar, complete vintage pin-up calendar comprising 12 illustrated monthly sheets from January through December. Each month features a different color Varga Girl illustration after a painting by Vargas, accompanied by a humorous four-line verse by Phil Stack. The illustrations bear Vargas’s familiar printed ‘a. Varga’ signature and Esquire insignia.
Bio:
Alberto Vargas (Peruvian-American, 1896–1982) was one of the most celebrated pin-up illustrators of the 20th century. After establishing his career in the United States, Vargas became particularly famous for the glamorous female figures he produced for Esquire magazine. During this period his illustrations appeared under the name ‘Varga, ’ and the resulting ‘Varga Girls’ became especially popular during World War II. His Esquire calendars were among the best-known manifestations of his work, combining a different illustration for each month with verses by Phil Stack.
