Summary:
Erté (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892–1990). Original hand signed gouache painting costume design drawing executed in gouache with gold pencil over graphite on paper.
Signed in ink. The drawing relates to a costume design created for a Russian ballet production of Castor and Pollux. An inventory number is noted in the upper right corner. The verso with additional studio annotations and working marks, consistent with an original production design. Born Romain de Tirtoff, Erté (1892–1990) was a Russian-born French artist often dubbed the "Father of Art Deco". Heavily influenced by the exotic, orientalist, and geometric stylings of the early Ballets Russes, his career was defined by theatrical stage and costume design. He frequently designed lavish dance costumes, blending the opulence of Russian ballet with the sleek, modern aesthetic of Art Deco
