Victor Simonin (1877–1946), still life with flowers and fruit, oil on canvas. The composition depicts a lush arrangement of flowers in vessels accompanied by assorted fruit arranged across a tabletop. Signed lower right.

Victor Simonin (Belgian, 1877–1946) was a painter and watercolorist born in Ixelles, Brussels. He studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts in 1894–1895 and continued his artistic training in the circle of painters including Alfred Bastien, Auguste Oleffe, Maurice Wagemans, Frans Smeers, Amédée Degreef, and Albert Pinot. Simonin simultaneously studied violin at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and reportedly intended to pursue music professionally until an injury to his left hand led him to devote himself fully to painting. (Wikipedia)

Simonin became associated with Le Sillon, the influential Brussels artists’ circle centered around Alfred Bastien and other graduates of the Brussels Academy. His work concentrated particularly on floral and still-life subjects, along with landscapes and occasional portraits, and is characterized by vigorous brushwork, rich handling of paint, and a full, expressive palette. He exhibited in Brussels throughout the early 20th century, including at the Brussels Salons and exhibitions of Le Sillon. In 1941 he received the Prix Auguste Oleffe. Posthumous retrospectives included an exhibition in Ixelles in 1948 and later exhibitions at the Rouge-Cloître art center in Auderghem. His work is represented in the collection of the Museum of the City of Brussels.
