Summary:
Charles Joshua Chaplin (French, 1825-1891). Young Girl With a Cat, oil on canvas painting depicting a young woman in a white dress seated with a cat in her lap. Presented in a giltwood frame with a plaque identifying the artist. An old handwritten label affixed to the reverse identifies Chaplin and references provenance from the collection of Madame Robert, née Léontine Lamée, widow of Robert. Canvas has been relined.
Chaplin was a French painter and engraver known particularly for his portraits and depictions of women, often characterized by a soft palette and refined handling. In 1861, he contributed paintings to the decoration of the Salon des Fleurs in the Palais des Tuileries and also worked at the Élysée Palace. He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salons and sent works to the Royal Academy in London.
