Summary:
Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018), original pencil design drawing for HemisFair ’68, the 1968 World’s Fair held in San Antonio, Texas. The study incorporates Indiana’s characteristic use of bold typography, numbers and geometric imagery, with a large central star and the words ‘HEMISFAIR, ’ ‘68’ and ‘SAN ANTONIO’ incorporated into the composition.
Indiana designed the official poster for HemisFair ’68, which ran in San Antonio from April 6 through October 6, 1968. Related preparatory studies for his HemisFair designs are documented, including unique pencil and colored-pencil works.
Dated April 1968 within the drawing. Signed in pencil by Robert Indiana on the reverse and accompanied by additional pencil inscriptions. The work is presented in a white shadowbox-style frame.
Provenance: Accompanied by a DVC Auctions receipt identifying the work as an original Robert Indiana pencil design for ‘Hemisfair’ and stating provenance from the Estate of Robert Indiana. The receipt records the work as Lot 726, sold March 1, 2026.
