Summary:
Raphaël Delorme (French, 1885-1962), La Danse (‘The Dance’), oil on canvas. Large Art Deco composition depicting a female dancer within an arched architectural setting, her figure posed dramatically before an expansive landscape. A second figure appears at lower right, while stylized floral and geometric elements frame the composition.

Signed ‘R. Delorme’ lower right and titled ‘LA DANSE’ along the lower center. Executed in the strong academic technique and neoclassical vocabulary associated with the Bordeaux School and French Art Deco.

Delorme’s paintings are closely associated with the Bordeaux School and the work of contemporaries including Jean Dupas and Jean Despujols. His compositions characteristically combine academic draftsmanship with Art Deco classicism, symbolism, irony and occasional visual puns. His use of architectural settings and carefully constructed perspective also reflects his background in stage design.

During his lifetime, Delorme exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon d’Automne, including exhibitions during the early 1920s. Although he experienced limited commercial success during his lifetime, his work has subsequently received renewed attention within the study and market for French Art Deco painting.
