Summary:
Sonia Delaunay (Ukrainian-French, 1885–1979). Gouache on paper depicting a vibrant Orphist abstract composition constructed from overlapping and intersecting circular and geometric forms in vivid red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, and black. Signed “Sonia Delaunay” lower left. We like this piece.
Sonia Delaunay was born in Ukraine in 1885 and raised in St. Petersburg. After studying drawing in Karlsruhe under Ludwig Schmid-Reutte, she moved to Paris in 1905, where she became closely involved with the avant-garde. She studied at the Académie de La Palette, where her fellow students included Amédée Ozenfant and André Dunoyer de Segonzac. Her early work reflected the influence of Fauvism and at times displayed an Expressionist character distinct from the vibrant geometric abstraction for which she later became known.
Following a brief marriage to art dealer Wilhelm Uhde, she married artist Robert Delaunay in 1910. Together, the Delaunays became central figures in the development of Orphism, an approach to abstraction emphasizing rhythmic geometric forms, simultaneous color contrasts, and the expressive possibilities of pure color. Sonia continued to paint throughout her life, although she exhibited her paintings relatively infrequently for many years following her first exhibition in 1908, returning to more extensive exhibition activity after Robert Delaunay’s death in 1941.
Works by Sonia Delaunay are represented in major international museum collections, including the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; Tate, London; and collections in Paris.
