Summary:
Honoré Pons (French, 1773–1851), French Restoration period mantel clock in finely chased and gilt bronze with white marble, circa 1827. The architectural case features figural uprights modeled as putti or classical youths supporting the arched clock housing, with pinecone finials and an antique-style covered urn surmount decorated with laurel garlands and flanked by ram’s heads. The case rests on a white marble base with gilt bronze mounts and turned feet.
Circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic minute markings. The movement is stamped with the Pons ‘Médaille d’Or 1827’ mark. Bronze additionally has the inscription ‘Lux 85.’ Accompanied by pendulum.
Honoré Pons was an important French clockmaker and manufacturer who played a significant role in the development of the French clockmaking industry during the first half of the 19th century. He received numerous awards for his movements, including medals in 1819 and 1823 and gold medals in 1827, 1839, and 1844.
