THE FALL EXCEPTIONELLE SALE DAY 1
Lot 2:
Description
Keywords: Western Genre Scene, Frontier Illustration Influence, Academic Realism Movement, Tonalist Influence, Stagecoach Transport Theme, Cowboy Attire, Wooden Coach Elements, American West Iconography, Moonlit Setting, wall art
Summary:
N.C. Wyeth (attrib) “The Pay Stage” Oil on Canvas Painting. Apocryphal “Frederic Remington” signature lower right….no clue why it is there.
Notes: Wyeth occasionally painted second versions of original works for private commissions or his own satisfaction. One notable example involves an illustration originally created in 1906 for The Last of the Mohicans: original first version done in 1906 and a last recognized version done in 1939.
While he did not create identical "second versions" in the sense of a machine-made copy (forgeries of his work do exist and are identifiable by experts as they lack his fluid style), he did create multiple, distinct, authentic original artworks based on the same subject or preliminary sketches.

All descriptions, catalog statements, condition reports, reflect an opinion based on the information provided to us at the time of cataloging. Any certificates of authenticity, if provided by consignor, will be noted in the catalog. Clocks and watches are not warranted or represented to keep accurate time. We strongly recommend that all vintage lighting be examined or rewired prior to use.
Auction Galleries reselling works do not issue Certificates of Authenticity. COA’s should best be sought from the original artist or their foundations, which often refrain from giving written authentication opinions. Accordingly, works are sold as ATTRIBUTED to the artist or maker named in the description. These attributions reflect an OPINION and are intended to provide collectors, researchers, and institutions the opportunity to study and further contextualize the material offered or establish a work’s art-historical significance.
