Summary:
Erik Kollin was Fabergé’s chief goldsmith, appointed by Peter Carl Fabergé in 1870. He is credited with creating the first Fabergé egg, the Hen Egg, commissioned by the Tsar in 1885.
This egg-form table clock bears Imperial markings for the Russian 84 silver standard, Moscow, and Erik Kollin’s mark. The silver clock is richly decorated with chased foliate scrollwork and blue and green enamel panels, and is raised on a hexagonal base with conforming ornament and ball feet. The front is fitted with a white enamel dial with Roman numerals. The egg opens at the center to reveal a silver crucifix in the round, along with a small covered compartment in the upper half. The top is surmounted by an enamel medallion bearing the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle. Three areas are struck with the 84 silver standard and town mark, the EK workmaster’s mark for Erik Kollin, and an additional Cyrillic KO punch generally associated with the Fabergé firm.
After leaving the Fabergé firm in 1886, he devoted himself to his own creations, developing a passion for reproducing objects discovered at archaeological sites, notably gold replicas of jewelry from the Scythian treasure found at Kerch. He did, however, continue to work occasionally for Fabergé.
(Attractive overall appearance with honest age. Clock movement not tested. The top compartment lid and front clock cover do not fully evenly and sit slightly proud when shut.)
Measurement: 10 x 5 x 5 in. (25.4 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm.) approx
