Summary:
Al Hirschfeld (American, 1903–2003), limited-edition etching depicting actress and performer Marlene Dietrich reclining theatrically in a top hat, fishnet stockings and high heels. Pencil signed ‘Hirschfeld’ lower right and numbered 86/100 lower left.

Hirschfeld was one of America’s most celebrated caricaturists, particularly known for his elegant black-and-white portraits of actors, musicians and Broadway performers. His drawings appeared in The New York Times for more than seven decades. Following the birth of his daughter Nina in 1945, Hirschfeld began concealing her name within many of his drawings, creating the well-known ‘NINA’ tradition that encouraged viewers to search his compositions for the hidden name.
